Hi! It’s Brenda from Hola Spanish. Today I’d like to explain to you the difference between YA and TODAVÍA in Spanish.

YA y TODAVÍA son adverbios y por rende vamos a necesitar verbos para modificar y usar YA y TODAVÍA.
YA and TODAVÍA are adverbs and therefore we’re going to need a verb to modify and use YA and TODAVÍA.

Empecemos con el adverbio YA.
Let’s start with YA.

Tenemos 3 estructuras que van a cambiar el significado de este adverbio:
We have 3 structures that Will change the meaning of this adverb:

Estructura #1: YA + verbo en presente = now
Usamos esta estructura para hablar de una acción que estamos completando o que queremos completar en este momento o en un futuro muy cercano.
We use this structure to talk about an action that we’re completing or that we have the intention to complete now or around now.

Por ejemplo:
-Ya te llamo [I’ll call you now]
-Ya voy [I’m coming/I’m on my way]

Estructura #2: YA + verbo en pretérito = already
Usamos esta estructura para hablar de una acción que hemos completado recientemente. Es una acción que hemos realizado en el pasado.
We use this structure to talk about an action that we have recently completed. It’s an action we have already completed in the past.

Por ejemplo:
-Ya comí [I’ve already eaten]
-Ya vi la película [I’ve already seen the movie]
-Ya se la respuesta [I already know the answer]

Estructura #3: YA + no + verbo en el presente = no longer/ not anymore
Usamos esta estructura para habar de acciones que solíamos hacer de manera habitual en el pasado y que ahora no hacemos más.
We use this structure to talk about actions that we used to habitually do in the past and we no longer do anymore.

Por ejemplo:
-Ya no voy al cine todos los sábados [ I no longer to to the movies every Saturday]
-Ya no camino por las mañanas [I no longer walk in the mornings]
-Ya no como carne [ I no longer eat meat]

¡Perfecto! Ahora hablemos de las estructuras y los significados del adverbio TODAVÍA.
Perfect! Now let’s talk about the structures and meanings of the adverb TODAVÍA.

Estructura #1: TODAVÍA + verbo en presente = still
Usamos esta estructura para hablar de una acción que hacíamos en el pasado y continuamos haciendo en el presente.
We use this structure to talk about an action that we used to do in the past and we still contunue to perform in the present.

Por ejemplo:
-Todavía como helado de chocolate [ I still eat chocolate ice-cream]
-Todavía estudio español [ I still study Spanish]
-Todavía tengo que pagar las cuentas [I still have to pay my bills]

Estructura #2: TODAVÍA + no + verbo en presente o pretérito = not yet
Usamos esta estructura para hablar de una acción que tenemos la intención de completar en el presente o futuro cercano.
We use this structure to talk about an action tha we have the intention to complete in the present or near future.

Por ejemplo:
-Todavía no pago mis cuentas/Todavía no pague las cuentas [ I haven’t paid my bills yet]
-Todavía no voy al dentista/Todavía no fui al dentista [ I haven’t been to the destist yet]
