#1- El laberinto del fauno:
El título en inglés es Pan´s Labyrinth.
Its title in English is Pan’s Labyrinth.
Puse esta película al comienzo de la lista porque es una de mis favoritas de todos los tiempos y no quiero que ustedes se pierdan la oportunidad de verla.
I put this movie at the top of the list because it’s one of my favourites movies of all times and I don’t want to miss the opportunity to see it.
El director – The director:
Fue escrita, producida y dirigida por el genial Guillermo del Toro. Aunque no hayas escuchado su nombre antes, de todas maneras seguramente has visto o has oído hablar de algunas de sus películas como The Shape of Water, Hellboy y Crimson Peak.
It was written, produced and directed by the brilliant Guillermo del Toro. I’m sure you’ve heard of him before. However, If you haven’t, guaranteed you’ve probably watched or at least heard one of his films, like The Shape of Water, Hellboy and Crimson Peak.
Fiel a su estilo, Guillermo del Toro fusiona elementos fantásticos con la realidad. Por eso creo que es una película que enamora tanto a los amantes del género fantástico como a los del género histórico.
True to his style, Guillermo del Toro combines fantasy with reality which is why I think it’s a film that captivates both fantasy genre fans and historical genre fans.
La historia – The plot:
La historia se desarrolla en España en 1944, algunos años después de la Guerra Civil española que acabó con el General Franco victorioso. Para aquellos de ustedes que no saben, Franco recibió el apoyo del régimen fascista de la Alemania nazi. Franco compartía algunas ideas de Hitler y fue un dictador brutal.
The story takes place in Spain in 1944, few years after the Spanish Civil War that ended with General Franco in power. For those of you who don’t know much about Franco… Franco received the support of the fascist regime of Nazi Germany. Franco was a brutal dictator and even shared some of Hitler’s ideas.
Los rebeldes se refugiaron en los montes desde donde continúan con la resistencia. Hacia allí viaja nuestra protagonista Ofelia, una niña de 11 años a quien le fascinan los cuentos de hadas. Su madre se ha casado en segundas nupcias con el Capitán de la Policía Armada, Vidal, quien fue encargado de eliminar a la guerrilla rebelde. Ofelia va a conocer por primera vez a su padrastro y a vivir con él.
The rebels sought refuge in the mountains from where they continue with the resistance. That’s where our protagonist Ophelia, an 11-year-old girl who is fascinated with fairy tales is travelling to. Her mother married for the second time to the Captain Vidal. He is the Captain of the Armed Police, he is in charge of eliminating the rebellious guerrilla. Ofelia is going to meet her stepfather for the first time and to live with him.
Vidal y Ofelia serán antagonistas en un filme donde la realidad se chocará y mezclará con la fantasía. En fin, una película que no puedes dejar de ver si estudias español.
Vidal and Ofelia are antagonists in a film where reality clashes with fantasy. This is a must-watch movie if you’re learning Spanish.
#2 – Contratiempo:
La traducción del título en inglés si lo consideramos como una palabra sería algo así como ´problem´, ´setback´ y también ´off beat´ o ´off time´. Si lo tomamos como dos palabras contra tiempo, entonces en inglés se diría ´against the time´. Sin embargo, por alguna extraña razón en inglés la llamaron ´the invisible guest´. La verdad que no entiendo muy bien por qué.
The translation of the title in English if we consider it as one word would be something like ‘problem’, ‘setback’ and also ‘off beat’ or ‘off time’. If we split it into two words CONTRA and TIEMPO, then it means AGAINST TIME in English. However, for some strange reason in English it was titled The Invisible Guest. To be honest I’m not sure why they called it like that.
La historia – The plot:
Adrián Doria, un importante y exitoso empresario español que está casado y tiene familia, se despierta en una habitación de un hotel en donde yace muerta su amante, Laura. Es en ese instante en el que Adrián es arrestado por la policía y acusado de asesinato.
Adrián Doria, a successful Spanish businessman who is married and has a family, wakes up in a hotel room next to the dead body of his lover, Laura. At that moment, Adrián is arrested by the police and accused of murder.
Su abogado contrató para defenderlo en su juicio a Virginia Goodman. Ella es la mejor abogada de toda la ciudad y nunca ha perdido un caso en toda su carrera. La defensa de Adrián Doria es el último caso que decide tomar antes de su retiro y hará todo lo que necesario para no manchar su reputación profesional. Ella está decidida a ganar a toda costa.
For his trial defense, Adrian’s lawyer hired Virginia Goodman. She is the best lawyer in the entire city and has never in her entire career lost a case. Adrián Doria’s defense is the last case she decides to take before her retirement and will do whatever it takes not to ruin her win history. She’s determined to win at all costs.
Tipo de película – Genre:
Es una película de suspenso que está llena de vueltas de tuercas y un final inesperado.
This movie is a thriller full of twists and it has an unexpected end.
Tiene una trama compleja en la que la verdad lucha por salir a flote en un mar de mentiras. Me gusta mucho una frase que usaron para promocionar estar película porque creo que la resume a la perfección: Toda historia tiene dos caras, la verdad sólo una.
It has a complex plot in which the truth fights to come out in a sea of lies. I really like a phrase they used to promote the release of the film. I think it sums it up perfectly: every story has two sides, the truth has only one.
#3 -Lusers, los amigos no se eligen:
Una comedia desopilante que no puedes dejar de ver.
A hilarious comedy that you must watch.
La historia – The plot:
Los destinos de un argentino, un chileno y un peruano se entrecruzan en una aventura disparatada llena de acción y risas.
The destinies of an Argentine, a Chilean and a Peruvian are intertwined in a crazy adventure full of action and laughter.
Después de sufrir un accidente, estos tres hombres se encuentran perdidos en el corazón de la selva amazónica, de la que tratarán de salir para llegar a tiempo para ver la final de la Copa Mundial de fútbol del 2014 en Brasil.
After a terrible accident, these three men are lost in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, from which they will try to scape to be in the final of the 2014 Soccer World Cup in Brazil.
Estereotipos – Stereotypes:
Mucho del humor de esta película está basado en estereotipos que tenemos de los argentinos, chilenos, peruanos y brasileños. Si no los conoces, claro que no te parecerá tan entretenida. El argentino es hablador y sabelotodo. Por otro lado, el peruano es vivo y está orgulloso de la comida de su país. Y por último, el chileno es tímido, conservador y tradicional.
Most of the jokes in this movie revolve around stereotypes we have of Argentines, Chileans, Peruvians and Brazilians. If you do not know these stereotypes, it could get a little boring. Therefore, I’d like to explain them a bit so you can understand the movie better. the Argentine is talkative and know-it-all, the Peruvian is cheeky and proud of Peruvian food, and finally, the Chilean is timid, conservative and traditional.
La película también se burla de las disputas territoriales entre Perú y Chile, o la eterna enemistad futbolera entre Argentina y Brasil.
The film also mocks the territorial disputes between Peru and Chile, or the eternal football rivalry between Argentina and Brazil.
Lunfardo – Slang:
Otra cosa que hace al humor de esta película es el idioma, que lamentablemente se pierde mucho en la traducción al inglés. Las tres nacionalidades tienen una forma diferente de hablar. Por ejemplo, el argentino dice ´boludo´ mientras que el chileno dice ´huevón´, son típicas de cada país, pero al inglés se traducen igual como ´dude, mate, or idiot´.
Another thing that makes this movie very funny is the language. Unfortunately it gets lost in translation if you don’t speak Spanish at all. The three nationalities have a different way of speaking. For example, the Argentine says ‘boludo’ while the Chilean says ‘huevón’, these words are typical of these countries. They share the same meaning in English. Depending on the context they can mean ‘dude, mate, or idiot’, like an insult but the colourful accents get lost in the process.
