¡Hola! Soy Brenda Romaniello, tu profesora de español de Hola Spanish. Como sabes tenemos 2 tiempos pasados simples en español: el pretérito y el imperfecto, pero no tenemos estos tiempo verbales exactamente igual en inglés. Hoy vamos a ver la diferencia entre el pretérito y el imperfecto, específicamente cuando contamos historias.

Hi! It’s Brenda Romaniello, your teacher from Hola Spanish. As you know we have 2 simple past tenses in Spanish: the pretérito and the imperfecto, but we don’t have these 2 exact same past tenses in English. Today we’re going to have a look at the difference between the pretérito and the imperfect, especially when telling stories.

El Imperfecto

Cuando contamos una historia en el pasado, usamos este tiempo verbal para describir todo lo que esté relacionado a la situación contenxtual de la historia como las personas involucradas, el lugar, el clima, la hora, etc. Todo lo que sea una descripción para situar la historia en un tiempo y un espacio, lo vamos a hacer con la ayuda del imperfecto.

When we tell a story in the past, we use this past tense to describe everthing that is related to the contextual situation of the story such as the people involved, the place, the weather, the time, etc. Everything that is a description to set the story in a place and time, we’re going to do it with the help of the imperfecto past tense in Spanish. 

El Pretérito

Por el contrario, usamos el pretérito para narrar la historia, para decir qué pasó.

On the contrary, we use the preterito to move the story forward, to tell the story, to say what happened.

Vamos a Analizar esta Historia – Let’s anaylise This Story

Caminaba de regreso a casa.
Eran las 3 de la mañana y hacía mucho frio.
No había gente en la calle y recién comenzaba a nevar.
I was walking back home.
It was 3 am and it was very cold.
There was no one in the streets and it was starting to snow.

De repente escuché unos pasos cada vez más cerca.
Con miedo comencé a caminar más rápido y crucé la calle.Cuando llegué al parque sentí una mano en mi hombro derecho y una voz que me dijo: ‘Brenda, soy yo, Pedro’.
Suddenly, I heard some steps getting closer.
In fear, I started walking faster and crossed the road.
When I got to the park, I felt a hand in my right shoulder and a voice that said: ‘Brenda, it’s me Pedro’.

Párrafo – Paragraph #1

Como ves en el primer párrafo, todos los verbos están en el imperfecto porque describen la situación contextual de la historia.

As you can see in the first paragraph, all verbs are in the imperfecto because they describe the contextual situation of the story.

Párrafo – Paragraph #2:

Aquí los verbos están en el pretérito porque narran, cuentan lo que pasó.

Here the verbs are in the preterito because they narrate, they tell what happened.
