Hi! It’s Brenda Romaniello, your Spanish teacher from Hola Spanish. Today, I’d like to share with you a topic that it’s been hightly requested by Hola Spanish students. The difference between LLEVAR and TRAER.
Hay dos diferencias principales:
There are two main differences:
#DIFERENCIA NÚMERO UNO: PUNTO DE REFERENCIA
#DIFFERENCE NUMBER ONE: POINT OF REFERENCE
La primera diferencia es el punto de referencia de partida y de llegada. LLEVAR es un verbo de movimiento que implica trasladar o mover algo o alguien desde aquí que sería el punto de partida, hasta allí que sería el punto de llegada. La traducción al inglés de LLEVAR es: to carry, to take.
The first difference is the point of reference for departure and arrival. LLEVAR is a verb of movement that implies to move something of someone from here which would be the point of departure, to there, which would be the point of arrival. The translation for LLEVAR is: to carry, to take.
TRAER es un verbo de movimiento también pero que tiene el recorrido opuesto. TRAER significa trasladar algo o alguien desde un punto distante hacia nosotros. La traducción al inglés de TRAER es: to bring.
TRAER is a verb of movement as well but from the opposite direction. TRAER mean to move something or someone from a point over there towards us. The translation for TRAER is: to bring.

#DIFFERENCE NUMBER TWO: DIFFERENT WAY TO USE THEM IN SPANISH AND ENGLISH
La segunda diferencia es que en español y en inglés tendemos a usarlos de manera deferente. Vamos a analizar el siguiente ejemplo:
The second difference is that we use them differently in Spanish compared to English. Let’s analyse the following example:
“Este sábado es el cumpleaños de Ana y Ana está haciendo una fiesta. Nos pidió a todos los invitados que traigamos algo para beber. Yo voy a llevar un vino y una cerveza.”
“This Saturday is Ana’s birthday and she’s hosting a party. She asked all of us guests to bring something to drink. I’m going to take wine and beer.”
Usamos el verbo TRAER en: ‘Nos pidió a todos los invitados que traigamos algo para beber’ porque ella está en su casa y entonces los invitados van a venir con una bebida, es decir, van a trasladar la bebida hacia la fiesta.
We use the verb TRAWER in: ‘Nos pidió a todos los invitados que traigamos algo para beber’ (She asked all of us guests to bring something to drink) because she is in her house and her guests will come with drinks, that is to say, they will move drinks towards the party.
En la frase: ‘Yo voy a llevar un vino y una cerveza’, usamos LLEVAR porque yo voy a ir a la fiesta, la fiesta es el punto de destino y voy a trasladar las bebidas para la fiesta desde mi punto de partida que es mi casa o la tienda.
In the phrase: ‘Yo voy a llevar un vino y una cerveza’ (I’m going to take wine and beer), we use LLEVAR because I’m going to go to the party, the party is the point of destination and I’m going to move the drinks from my point of departure which is my house or the store.
