False Friends in English and Spanish – Falsos amigos

False Friends in English and Spanish:

¡Hola! It’s Brenda Romaniello here today ¿Cómo estás? Welcome to Hola Tuesday, your weekly Spanish lesson!!
I have the puuurfect intro for today’s lesson. I’m very happy this week because I’m cat sitting my best friend’s cat and she is adorable!! I’m obviously a cat person, though I equally love dogs… ok I guess I’m an animal lover in general… But, in spite of this, I don’t have any pets. The thing is I lived in an apartment for 5 years and the landlord didn’t allow us to have any pets and now that I finally have a backyard after we moved houses, we’re renovating. So, when my best amigo said he needed someone to look after Pris (the cat) while he was away, I jumped of joy and put my hand up for the task. The hardest part will be to give it back upon his return. She’s such a cutie!

Here is some quick vocabulary about pets in Spanish:
Pet = mascota
I don’t have pets = No tengo mascotas
I have pets, I have a cat and a dog = Tengo mascotas, tengo un gato y un perro
Do you have pets? = ¿Tienes mascotas?

Are you an animal lover? Are you a cat or dog person? ¿Tienes mascotas? Let me know in the comments below!

Anyways, since I’m being a good, true friend looking after my friend’s cat; today, I’d like to talk to you about another kind of friends: False friends! Sometimes certain Spanish words look and sound similar to English such as: visitar, enemigo or familia which helps a lot to guess what they mean. However, we have to be careful about false friends between English and Spanish = Falsos amigos. So, false friends are words in Spanish that look and sound similar to English, but that actually mean something completely different.
