Hoy quiero compartir contigo un aspecto muy particular de la cultura latinoamericana y española. Me pregunto si tienes amigos latinos o españoles y si haz notado estas características y forma de comportarse.
Today I’d like to share with you a very peculiar aspect of the Latin and Spanish culture. I wonder if you have Latin or Spanish friends and if you have noticed these characteristics and behaviors.
Para nosotros, la comida es muy importante y siempre tenemos grandes reuniones familiares con mucha comida. En la cultura hispana se considera buenos modales ofrecer comida y bebida al menos 3 veces a nuestras visitas antes de aceptar un no como respuesta. Esta costumbre es por modestia. Muchas personas no quieren molestar y es considerado de buena educación insistir.
For us, food is very important and we always have big gatherings with family members and we have a lot of food. In the Hispanic culture it’s considered polite to offer food and drinks at least 3 times to our guests before we take a no for an answer. This tradition is because we’re taught to be modest. Most people don’t want to be an imposition and it’s considered good manners to insist because of this.
¿Quieres escuchar algo gracioso? Mis amigos anglosajones en Sídney me dicen ‘the feeder’ o ‘mamá Brenda’ cuando vienen a mi casa a visitarme porque siempre preparo demasiada comida y los obligo a comer hasta el punto de reventar… También me pasó cuando recién me mudé a Australia que muchas veces cuando visitaba a mis amigos y me ofrecían agua o un café que aceptaban mi rechazo la primera vez y no volvían a ofrecerme jajajaja y yo me quedaba con ganas de tomar agua o de beber algo caliente ¡Qué tonta!

My Anglo-Saxon friends in Sydney call me ‘the feeder’ or ‘mama Brenda’ when they come over to my place to visit because I always prepare too much food y I make them eat until they feel like they’ll explode… The opposite happened to me when I first moved to Australia. Many times when I was visiting friends, they’d offered me water or coffee and they’d accept my first rejection and didn’t offer me something to drink again hahaha and I would be super thirsty because I actually wanted some water or something warm to drink. How silly!

Cuando alguien te pregunta:
When someone asks you:
¿Quieres más comida? O ¿Quieres más?
Would you like more food? Would you like some more?
Puedes responder con alguna de estas 3 opciones:
You can answer with any of these 3 options:
1. No, gracias. Estoy lleno/llena [I’m full]
2. No, gracias. Estoy satisfecho/satisfecha [I’m satisfied]
3. No, gracias. Me he llenado [I’m full]
*lleno/llena – Satisfecho/satisfecha:
Aquí necesitamos diferenciar el género. Si eres hombre debes decir ‘estoy lleno’, ‘estoy satisfecho’. Si eres mujer debes decir ‘estoy llena’, ‘estoy satisfecha’.
Here we need to differentiate gender. If you’re a man you must say ‘estoy lleno’, ‘estoy satisfecho’. If you’re a woman you must use ‘estoy llena’, ‘estoy satisfecha’.
