Hace apenas unos días terminé de escuchar un audiolibro que me recomendó mi hermana Brenda y que se llama ´Sólo una cosa´ de Gary Keller y Jay Papasan. Es excelente y si tienes la oportunidad de leerlo, ¡por favor hazlo! No te arrepentirás. Los autores dan muchos consejos para lograr lo que quieras, hay uno en particular que me pareció especialmente útil para el estudio del español y es tener bien en claro cuál es tu objetivo.
Just a few days ago I finished listening to an audiobook that my sister Brenda recommended me. The audiobook is ‘The one thing’ by Gay Keller and Jay Papasan. It’s excellent and if you have the chance to read it, by all means please do it! You’ll not regret it. The writers share tips to achieve whatever you want to achieve; there is one in particular that I thought was precisely useful for learning Spanish and that is to really know what your goal is.
Aunque parece muy simple, te sorprendería saber que hay muchísimos estudiantes que no se preguntan cuál es el objetivo por el cual quieren estudiar español antes de comenzar un curso. Por eso, si son principiantes, yo apenas los conozco les pregunto sin vueltas: ¿Por qué estudias español?
Although it seems silly, you’d be surprised to know that there are many Spanish students that have never asked themselves what they’d like to achieve before they start a course. This is why, if they’re beginners, as soon as I meet them I ask them straight away: why are you learning Spanish?
Y es que dependiendo de tu meta final, te enfocarás en diferentes aspectos del español. Supongamos, por ejemplo, que quieres viajar a España por tres semanas. Con toda probabilidad estudiar la gramática en profundidad como la conjugación de verbos y la diferencia entre adjetivos y sustantivos no te será para nada útil. Si eres un viajero, será mejor que te enfoques en conversación básica: preguntar por el precio de las cosas, hacer reservaciones y ese tipo de cosas. ¿Qué si eres un contador que va a vivir a México por dos años? Necesitarás aprender vocabulario específico de las finanzas.
The thing is that depending on you final goal, you’ll focus in different parts of the Spanish language. Let’s say for example, that you want to travel to Spain for three weeks. It’s quite likely that studying Spanish grammar in depth like verb conjugation and the difference between adjectives and nouns will not be useful at all for you. If you’re a traveller, it’ll be better for you to focus on basic conversational skills: enquiring for the price of things, bookings and that sort of things. What about if you’re an accountant that is planning to live in Mexico for two years? You’ll need Spanish vocabulary for finances.
Además de esta pregunta, yo me haría otras dos más. La segunda sería: ¿Cuándo puedes estudiar español? Aprender cualquier idioma es un proceso que requiere de dedicación y tiempo. Debes analizar tu estilo de vida y determinar qué días y a qué hora puedes estudiar español. Un padre de dos niños pequeños con un trabajo de tiempo completo quizás sólo tenga 15 minutos por día para estudiar mientras maneja a su empleo. No es lo ideal, pero es mejor que nada. El tiempo disponible condiciona los recursos que seleccionamos para estudiar. Esa persona se beneficiaría de hacer un curso de español en línea en vez de uno presencial.
Besides to this question, I’d ask myself another two. The second question would be: how much can you study Spanish? Learning any language is a process that requires dedication and time. You must look at your life style and determine which days and at what time you can learn Spanish. A father of two small children with a full time job may only have 15 minutes a day to learn Spanish while driving to his work. It’s not ideal but it’s better than nothing. Our time availability limits the resources that we can select for learning.That person would benefit from an online course instead of a face-to-face course.
La última pregunta a tener en cuenta es: ¿Cuál es tu estilo de aprendizaje? Muchas personas toman la decisión de estudiar español, se inscriben en un curso con un profesor que tiene un estilo muy diferente de ellos y acaban por rendirse pensando que no son buenos para aprender idiomas. Se trata de encontrar un libro, un audio, un curso o un profesor o profesora que sea compatible con ellos. Si aprenden mejor de forma visual, un material que contenga muchas imágenes y gráficos será fantástico. Si son tímidos, será mejor hacer clases privadas en vez de grupales. Hay muchísimas opciones para estudiar español, lo mejor que puedes hacer es probar varios estilos y ver cuáles funcionan mejor para ti.
The last question to keep in mind is: what is you learning style? Many make the decision to study Spanish, they sign up to a course with a teacher with a different style to theirs and they give up believing that they are not good for learning languages. It’s about finding a book, an audio, a program or a teacher that clicks with them. If they’re visual people, a teaching material with pictures and graphics will suit them best. If they are shy, it’ll be better to enrol with private lessons instead of group lessons. There are so many options out there to learn Spanish, the best thing that you can do is try various styles and find out which ones work better for you.
En esencia, no hay una ´mejor’ manera de estudiar español, sin embargo, aunque suene cliché, definitivamente hay una manera correcta para ti que depende de tu objetivo, de tu tiempo disponible y de los recursos que tengas a tu alcance.
In essence, there isn’t a ‘better’ way for learning Spanish, however, although it might sound cheesy, there definitely is a right way for you depending on your goal, your availability and the resources that are available for you.
